Triathlon Basics: Intro & Gear

A practical beginner guide to understand triathlon format and prepare your first race setup.

1

Intro

Triathlon is a continuous, multi-discipline endurance race made up of swim → bike → run, completed back-to-back without stopping the clock. The most common beginner distance is Sprint (typically ~750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run), while Olympic and Ironman 70.3 distances are longer. The clock starts at the swim and only stops when you cross the finish line—transitions between disciplines (called T1: swim-to-bike, and T2: bike-to-run) are part of your total race time. Drafting rules, course markings, and cut-off times vary by event, so always review the athlete briefing.

Race day flow is structured but simple: you rack your bike in the transition area, lay out your helmet, shoes, and run gear, then head to the swim start. After the swim, you run to transition, put on your helmet before touching your bike, and mount only after the designated mount line. After the bike leg, you dismount at the line, rack your bike, change shoes, and head out for the run. The run finishes at the event arch—where pacing discipline often matters most, especially in hot conditions like Cyprus.

For your first event, focus on preparation rather than speed: practice open-water swimming if applicable, rehearse a "brick" session (bike immediately followed by a short run), and simulate transitions at home to reduce race-day stress. Use simple gear—well-fitting goggles, a reliable bike, helmet, race belt—and arrive early to set up calmly. Above all, treat your first triathlon as a learning experience; smooth execution and energy management are more valuable than chasing an aggressive finish time.
